Dare, dare to step outside.

IMG_1138What will we discover when we step

out of the common, comfortable, familiar?

I have found that interesting things, places,

and people are found all around us when we

pay attention and dare step out.

We are past the first half of the year;

I hope your goals and plans are on track,

I hope that as you work through the process

of losing the weight, and making for a healthier

life, don’t waste the opportunity to enjoy, and live,

live fully. Step out of the comfort and the familiar.

Take a risk and go find something new, something

different and interesting., if it is new it will be worth it.

Stay focus remain successful.

Every Now And Then.

IMG_1102While I am all for going forth and taking

any and all the necessary extra steps, I also

believe that we should take any breaks and stops

needed for us to remain sane and centered.

To be successful full effort and commitment

should be put forth but attention should be paid

so we do not destroy by over-doing.

Take a break every now and then.

Go somewhere and enjoy something.

To me there is no better place than the beach,

and no better time than sunset. Talk about a magic

cleansing moment. Perspective I guess.

Gang figure out what works for you and

and use it for your growth.

The Real.

DSC_0061What is hot?  What is fast?

What is stylish? What is the it thing?

The answer is: It depends.

The same thing happens when it comes

to us. To diet, weight loss, appearance, etc.

It is about what is right for US. What is

appropriate and adequate for us.

Don’t let the flashy or trendy affect the process

you have delineated for yourself.

Keep it up and have an impact on your world.

The Love Of Click!!

I got the love of the still image from my father.

He carried a camera and in the later part of his

life he carried a tape recorder as well.

There are many a picture left that he took

of the family and it makes me realize just

how much happiness it brought him.

I know that there are two pictures in particular

that always put a simile on my face.

One is of my younger sister and myself

on the back of an old Chevy truck eating an

ice cream cone. The other is a picture of me

sitting by a fountain. Both pictures are Black

and white and remind me principally of my

father who has moved on but also of a different

time in life where the mortgage, weight loss and

many other things were not a problem… To Me.

Find something you love and enjoy it as you

continue to work on your goals and dreams.

Pleasure.

dsc_0048

I took this picture series at an ungodly hour

and it was a most memorable night.

Doing something we are passionate about

enjoying something we long to do is so great.

In my younger years I was a runner and I loved it

maybe because it was an alone endeavor as I am not

one for crowds or gangs or cliques.

Running helped me clear my mind and separate

my thoughts. I had this fixation on girls and money

and they were in direct opposition as both demanded

my time and attention.

Running and riding my bicycle kept me trim so weight

loss was never an issue or problem for me.

I enjoy my photography a lot I think the only thing

that could compete with that would be eating new stuff.

I love restaurants specially good ones but I hate when

a restaurant screwed up a simple dish or great ingredient.

I hope and want for people to be respectful of food. So much

is said of the culture and traditions in simple every day dishes.

I have learned to enjoy food from all over and maybe that is why

I miss Phoenix and Los Angeles so much. There is the possibility

of so many different meals. My favorite restaurant meals at this

point and time are: Vietnamese Pho at unPhogettable in Mesa, AZ

Their #5 Pho Tai, Nam, Gan is amazing.

And my second favorite is the Friend Chicken at Magnolias

restaurant in historic Charleston, SC.

Pleasure, nothing but pleasure.

Gang do not forget to live and enjoy this short life of ours.

Go and do something you love. LIVE MORE!!

Plans, Goals

directionsSo let me ask you something

How are your plans and goals doing?

Are you making progress?

Did you included plans for travel this year?

I hope you did. I have found travel transformational

for me. I have learned a lot about others but more

importantly about myself thanks to traveling.

The most popular goal at the start of the year is

weight loss and the second one is more money both

very important but we are a lot more than just

skinny and rich. How do we live? how do we grow?

Traveling is so very important.  So very relevant.

That has been my experience something that truly

inspires me.

Have you thought about walking the streets of Paris?

Sit at a plaza in Madrid? Drink coffee by a fountain in

Rome? Have a pint in Ireland? Hell go to the Grand Canyon

or walk the beach in Oceanside, visit El Alamo, take a long

look at The Rocky Mountains.

Gang just do something and go somewhere.

Dream it, plan it, book it, do it. You will never regret it.

Barbados.

Isla De Barbados

I took this picture while on a trip to Barbados.

I have traveled to every state in the USA and every state

in my country of Mexico with visits to Central America

and up and down the Caribbean. I am yet to find a place that

I connected to as I did with Barbados. The minutes and seconds

I spent there were perfect. This is the one place that

almost every day I think of and would want to go there

more than anywhere else in the world.

I just loved it there. Had great company and the weather

was amazing. The food was amazing. It was amazing.

I hope you are ready to start your new year and that you

have included in your goals some travel.

It is not about far or exotic but about new and

exciting.  Gang go do it and enjoy your days and your

meals. Life is worth it. Now go live it.

I Am.

eb478d1673e33e90f8d6c9467522d16dBeing Curious has provided for me

the environment to learn and grow.

Wondering about new foods and new

people. New places and new opportunities.

I remember the first time I had Shrimp and

grits or the first taste of Green Fried Tomatoes.

The first time I heard an Acadian accent or

the first time I had true French Cuisine or the

first time I set foot on the Caribbean.

Gang being curious is a gift. A gift that brings

forth the best in us. The best in us is many a time

something we do not deal with on daily basis

and it is a great discovery with in ourselves.

It was L F who brought out from within me

my passion for photography and it was her who

gave me the present of my first trip to the Caribbean

just two of many first times I enjoyed with her.

Even now I continue to be in love with photography

and the Caribbean. I have been back a couple of times

since that first time and every time it is like a new

discovery of an old trail. Exciting, new, familiar, old.

It has been my curiosity that has taken me north and

south and east to west in both Mexico and The United

States. I have now traveled most of the Caribbean including

Cuba back when it was not easy or popular.

I have learned a lot and have met a lot of people

and one thing I can say for sure I want to travel and

eat even more.

Great BBQ in Austin and Sioux Falls.

Amazing fried chicken in Charleston, SC

A stupidly good hot dog at the Varsity in Atlanta

Thanks Kat for that amazing trip.

Great fried oysters at Coconut Joes just off the

Atlantic’s coast in SC.

And so much more that I would make this a book

instead of a blog post.

Anyway stay curious my friends and you will

grow and live more.

Addictions

Photography.

Yes it is this addictive.

This is one of my favorite activities.

Find something that you are passionate

about and add it to you daily life.

We are more than just weight loss.

What is it that you would love doing

for the rest of your life even if no one would

pay you a cent for doing it.

Live Gang. Live Fully.

Passion.

What is it that gets you out of bed?

What are your passions?

When you are the happiest what are you doing?

Who are you doing it with?

We talk so much about weight loss but

we must not forget those things that make us

who we really are.

One of my passions is Photography and I say

one of them because I am just as passionate about

traveling, eating, riding and writing.

All of this things give me happiness.

The mixture of this things define just as

much as saying “I am a male” or “I am Hispanic”.

Gang find those things that you enjoy and go out

and enjoy them. I added these pictures of my self

enjoying a “Picture Safari”

(Sorry I did not intended to scare young children)

We can not forget to live while we are here.

The Meds In Our Days.

Pills

I know very well that I have to take certain meds

every single day. At very specific times.

I know that I need them.

But What to do when for whatever reason we

are unable to take them. What to do when

the pain hits and you are unable to function.

If you are depressed or dealing with fibro

with out your meds you might as well

just sit and breath as there is not much else

you can do. I KNOW.

There are many reason why we at times are

unable to take our meds as prescribed and

we must avoid that by any means but when it

happens try to have a plan B even if it is just

to howl at the moon in a therapeutic fashion.

or fantasize about inflicting the same pain

on some one who has not kept their promises.

Hope you never go through putting up with pain

because of lack of meds… It Sucks

If you use lyrica or Cymbalta like I do you know

how severe the withdrawals are if you do not

follow the prescribed times.

I guess I am just venting and letting my own

body know that we still have more battles to

fight in the future. All in all pains and all

I am grateful to be alive today.

I wish you all a great one today and always.

RD’s

atkins-cartoon

All my life I have had a love-hate relationship

with Dietitians. Every single one of them I have

had the pleasure to deal with has been a Liber..

Anyway… Having had to live in the real world

with real limitations and visiting with real flesh,

fat and bones persons I quickly realized that some

of the classic ideas and thoughts pushed by RD’s

were BS for the regular salt of the earth person walking

your street, USA.

This cartoon reminds me of just one example.

I struggled for years trying to lose 20 pounds. Yes you read

that right. MY first attempt was only a small 20 pounds and

I failed for the longest time.

Years later as part of my internship for my CDM (clinical

dietary manager OR  certified dietary manager) I did my

paper on the Atkins Diet. At that time I was at about

335 #’s and I threw my self into this paper and this

diet. I went from 335+ pounds to 225 pounds in 3 months.

My labs were amazing. My back pain gone, My stamina

through the roof. I felt great.

I lacked the discipline to keep it off and with my internship

and graduation behind me I revert to bad habits.

My point here is: Not all diets work for everybody, Not all

predicated concepts are fail proof. Not all that is pushed

on us by the ADA is perfect. And most important we  must

gather as much information and educations so that we might

find what works for us. Atkins worked for me but it does not

mean that I think It would work or that it should be tried by

everybody., far from it. We are all way too different. but,

Once you find what works for you make sure you stick

to it as there is where the lasting results await.

Stay committed to your goal. Remain centered on health.

Keep your goals and dreams present so that your work will be

enjoyable and satisfying.

Gang stay focused and stay successful.

The Price.

dsc_0757

San Isidro Border Crossing Tijuana, MX/San Diego, CA

Crossing the border back into the US

is the price we pay for enjoying Mexico.

It is all good until you have to pay by waiting

for hours while American Border Agents do their

job. I’m not mad at them but it sucks big time!!

With this as with everything else there is always

a price. We work out and look and feel better but

we pay with the pain and time of working out.

I am not mad I just realize and accept it and that

simple process helps me do better with my commitment.

Understand that nothing worthwhile will come easy

or free of pain and effort. Accept it and watch

worry and indecision melt away.

Gang it is not easy or free but totally worth it.

You, me, us we are worth it.

Let us remain focus so we might remain successful.

The Season.

20120602_163445_resizedThe weather is changing.

I find myself nostalgic and missing my home

in Mexico. This picture was taken there

a while back., sitting on the balcony.

I am not there right now. Wish I was.

I went for my walk today and for the first time

I required a jacket. A sure sign that I will

need to be mindful about food as we approach

the season of the year when many of us do

the most damage to our plans and goals.

Gang. Our journey is not one where we have to

deny ourselves of everything we love to eat.

We must however start with a plan and a clear

and honest idea of what is going to happen.

I will on one day have mashed potatoes. I know this

and I know what day that will be. So before I sit

at that table I will force my self to drink two (2)

glasses of water and then and only then I will

confront the potatoes.

I have a plan. Maybe dumb and silly for some

but this will work for me.

During the season I will eat pumpkin pie, turkey,

gravy, etc. And I will enjoy it.. A Lot.

I miss Rocky Point, Mexico So Very Much.
